Sundar Pichai is an IIT Kharagpur alumna and graduated in 1993 having studied metallurgical and material engineering. He was born in Chennai and his father was an electrical engineer for British large GEC.
He didn’t do a Ph.D.
After graduating from IIT, Sundar was suggested by his professors to get a Ph.D. Instead, he opted to do his MS and MBA. He pursued both at Stanford and Wharton Universities respectively. Sundar then joined McKinsey & Company as product manager and engineer within the Applied Materials department.
Sundar’s mother worked as a stenographer before Sundar was born. He had humble beginnings in Chennai. He lived together with his family in a two-room flat. Sundar and his younger brother slept on the living room floor. The family never owned a automobile but had a simple scooter. The house didn’t even have a telephone until Sundar was about 12 years old.
The arrival of the telephone worked wonders. Sundar still remembers telephone numbers he had dialled decades ago! The rotary system on the old telephones was an aid to help him memorize and remember the phone numbers – A deed that stood him in sensible position.
Sundar Pichai joined Google in 2004 after a stint at McKinsey as a consultant. His assignment at Google was to be a part of the team that worked on Google’s toolbar.
